If all the documents you want to keep safe are only kept on the external HDD, this might work just as well. If you have another PC, a desktop with multiple physical drives that has all the important data, then you could just lump them all together, because you have backups elsewhere. Everyone seems to be recommending to partition, however I am considering keeping a single C: partition and letting everything go to their own defaults all the time, since some stuff ends up in C: nonetheless.įor example, if I have all my stuff installed in D:, and I reformat C: most of the things in D: won't work anymore anyway. The obvious risk is data loss, but I didn't have critical data on my previous D: drive anyway (just apps and games, as I said). I will be reformatting soon, and I was considering using just one 500GB C: drive partition for Windows and programs/games.

However, throughout time, the C: partition fills up with junk, especially in places like My Documents (where evey single config file from every single program goes), C:/Program Files (because some programs just don't want to go anywhere else), and C:/Appdata, which is full of hidden files from programs installed not on C.

I tend to not use the default C:/Program Files install locations and install most of my software and games in the other partition. I have always partitioned a ~100GB C: for Windows, and the rest for programs. I have a laptop with a 500GB HDD and I keep most of my files on an external HDD.
